My Contribution Project

Team: Polyglots (Translation)

Project: Translating Learn WordPress into Spanish (Costa Rica)

About the project

Learn WordPress is the official platform for free WordPress courses, tutorials, and workshops. My project is to help make that content available to Spanish speakers in Costa Rica by translating its strings on translate.wordpress.org (locale es_CR).

When I joined the project, about half of the 980 strings were already translated, and several hundred were still pending. That means there is real, measurable work to do: each string I translate becomes part of the platform that new contributors use to learn WordPress in their own language.

What I’m doing

  • Translating pending strings: interface text, block descriptions, topic names, and error messages.
  • Reviewing fuzzy strings and fixing warnings so the translations stay consistent.
  • Following the Locale Glossary and the Translator Handbook to keep terminology and tone aligned with the rest of the Spanish WordPress community.

Why it matters to me

I study systems engineering in Spanish and work with technology in Costa Rica, so I know how much easier it is to learn when the material is in your own language. Translation is also a contribution that does not require writing core code, which makes open source more accessible to people like me.

Roadmap

Onboarding: WordPress.org profile, Slack, the required Learn WordPress courses, and this site.

Project work: translating strings for Learn WordPress (es_CR), attending a WordPress team meeting, taking part in a WordPress event, and regular check-ins with my mentor.

Wrap-up: final oral presentation of the project, with evidence and results.
